Briar Wood Platinum 3776 Fountain Pen

Currently out of stock

Three companies dominate Japanese fountain pen making, all established in the 1910's and 1920's and all motivated by their common desire to develop a superior Japanese counterpart to their Western competitors such as Waterman and Parker. Ironically, both latter companies have lost their once top dog positions in the 'fountain pen world', while Sailor, Pilot and Platinum today represent the holy trinity of excellence in writing utensils. The main and defining reason for this accolade is the fact that all three companies supervise their production from beginning to end within their very own factories. No subcontracting insures total quality control, and private ownership protects their original vision and enthusiasm for pen making.

Here offered, a beautiful variation on Platinum's classic model 3776 made using Erica Arborea also known as Briar wood. Briar wood, famously known as a premium material for smoking pipes, is extracted from the large tubers of giant heather, collected after 30 to 60 years in age. The material has the specificity of being heat-resistant, extremely hard and dense, thus perfectly suited to pen making avoiding the pitfalls of warping and distortion when working with wood on such a small scale.

Maybe you will ask why wood for a pen? Because it offers a completely different feel in hand : warm and natural, soft and silky, luxurious and unexpected, it will wear with grace, darken with time and become deeply personal. Indeed it is the use of this pen, with hundreds of hours of writing under its belt, which will bring, by way of the skin's natural oil, a hard patina of wear, a testament of the work that has been done.

Let's not forget the 14k nib, which we offer in Broad only. Please remember Platinum runs hard and fine and therefore we our recommendation here is broad for best ink flow (generous) balance and smoothness. Consider that broad is equal to medium where Platinum is concerned.
