Italian Hand-Coloured Woodblock Print, Leucojum
£120.00
Here depicted is a woodblock print of an image from Basilius Besler's Hortus Eystettensis (1613), a codex of the garden of the archbishop of Eichstätt, Bavaria, who also commissioned the work. It took over sixteen years to complete and was illustrated by a group of artists, including the painter Sebastian Schedel, the engraver Wolfgang Killian, and Besler's own brother. The publication of Hortus Eystettensis had a great impact on botanical art and documentation, for its rich details and luxurious, hand-coloured images. It was additionally printed in a cheaper, monochromatic version, as a reference book.
Today, these images have been reproduced as singular works to admire. Each woodblock print is hand-coloured, as it was in 1613, and of a limited edition.
Also available are prints of Roses and Botanical Herbs.
