Put bluntly they are a direct line to the late 19th century and early 20th century - a connection to an analogue era which feels like it is slipping slipping away. Indeed how they are made is exactly as it was in 1920. Heavy cardboard is stamped out by heavy bronze moulds - both halves, cut out, carefully stapled and sealed and then beautifully painted in bold striking complex colours. The characters depicted are just wild, weird, terrifying and hilarious. They show a whole other, more folklorish and morally ambivalent set of Christmas characters, a nice respite from the usual Christian symbols. \u2028\u2028Beyond the authenticity of manufacture, these objects also possess the authenticity of place and person, still made in the original factory and by the original family.
