Platinum "Izumo" Tame-nuri Fountain Pen

£700.00

Three companies dominate Japanese fountain pen making, all established in the 1910's and 1920’s, and all motivated by their common desire to develop a superior Japanese counterpart to their Western competitors such as Waterman and Parker. Ironically, the latter companies have lost their once top dog positions in the 'fountain pen world', while Sailor, Pilot and Platinum today represent the Holy Trinity of excellence in writing utensils. The main and defining reason for this accolade is the fact that all three companies supervise their production from beginning to end within their very own factories. No subcontracting ensures total quality control, and private ownership protects their original vision and enthusiasm for pen making.

This model, part of the Izumo range pays homage to Platinum’s founder - it is named after his place of birth. Tame-nuri is a lacquering technique wherein the urushi is layered over time creating a glossy ‘pool’ effect. This model is available in brown, or biwa-tame, and green, known as soratame. Only slightly visible when new, these coloured undercoatings shine through the lacquer, and will reveal themselves more over time and with use - a pen to cherish for years to come.

With a bicolour 18k gold nib in Broad, this pen is an excellent choice for those wanting to add an understated, yet unique instrument to their collection. We have chosen this nib size as Platinum's nibs tend to run on the finer side, and this broad provides a deliciously lubricated flow.
