In the 17th Century, it was the fashion to wear large ruffs around one's neck (think Harlequin) made out of pleated muslin or linen; those were at the time called bands. and the cylindrical boxes which were used to store them, bandboxes.
Bandboxes were later used to contain hats when fashions changed, but with the disappearance of these accessories from the modern wardrobe the bandbox became a memory of the past for the general consumer.
