Black Lamy Safari Rollerball

£19.62

Originally designed in 1980 with young people in mind, this pen addressed the specific functional needs for classroom use and painstakingly integrating such features into the design : namely resilience to breakage and ergonomics. 'User experience' was at the centre of the design process and words like "adventure" and "freedom" set the tone for the pen's spirit and now so aptly encapsulates the values Lamy stands for. The distinct triangle shaped grip (to help with correct finger and hand posture) to facilitate long periods of effortless writing ; its signature study metal clip, fit to withstand high levels of wear and tear ; the flat side of the barrel, which stops the pen from rolling away ; the practical window for checking the cartridge ink level are features which make the Safari a workhorse of a pen sold a very affordable price. Far beyond the classroom the Safari has become a true design classic and has excellent street cred amongst creatives in particular in the yellow colour - the definite choice for architects and design purists.

Unfortunately, no longer family owned, as of 2024, Lamy was bought by Japanese stationery powerhouse Mitsubishi Uni. Nevertheless Lamy remains German run, with its state of the art factory in Heidelberg which produces 95% of pen parts needed to build a full writing implement. Night and day the factory is able to produce parts unmanned. Similar to the Japanese pen making philosophy, Lamy believes in limiting outsourcing and 70 parts are produced in-house, which is nothing short of amazing from an industrial point of view. Our visit to the factory in 2023 corroborated much of the above impressions.
The company was founded by Josef Lamy in 1930. Prior to starting his own business, Josef Lamy had in fact been working as a sales rep for Parker. This influence can be found in Lamy's early pens, which used the same filling system as Parker, and whose conservative designs were loosely based on the classic 1921 Duofold.
Where he, and his son Dr. Manfred Lamy, did innovate radically is by using moulded plastics - as opposed to hand-turned acrylics and celluloids. Much like Braun, Citroen, Olivetti, post-war companies interested with ideas of modernity, Lamy broke with the past by creating mass-manufactured quality writing tools with a design focused approach.

On the subject of colour Dr Lamy said "The first three years after the release of Safari were a nightmare. It was mostly because of the marketing campaign. The first colours introduced were terracotta orange and savanna green, which were not quite appealing to children. White, blue, red and yellow colours came afterwards and they created a big stir. We learned the significant effect of colour on design. A plain product can turn into a design product when it is produced in white, helping the product maintain it's unique beauty"
