Historical Playing Cards, French Josephine Pattern
A faithful reproduction of a historical playing deck of cards in Napoleonic style dating from 1820 à la Jane Austen, with Empire waists and sartorial dandies in Regency fashions.
This deck includes numbers 1-10, three face cards, Jack, Queen and King per each suit. A nice tidbit about the French spirit of égalité, which established the Queen permanently as one of the face cards (instead of the knight) since the 15th century, instead of having 3 male face cards as did other national patterns. Merci!
Cards are simply a natural progression for our shop and our love of paper, given the parallel narrative between card manufacturing and decorative paper making both utilising the craft knowledge of woodblock print.
