Namiki Yukari Shooting Star Fountain Pen

£2,600.00

A futuristic subject matter for an otherwise traditional methodology - Maki-e, one of the high decorative arts of Japan has been a marker for quality and luxury for centuries. Originally lacquered upon an ebonite body, Namiki now uses a brass base for its top tier pens. More importantly maki-e is about expressing emotion and meaning through beautiful pictures. The Shooting Star, technically space debris which burns as it comes into contact with our atmosphere causing effects of light, speed and colour, has symbolically, from the ancient Greeks, in First Nations and the Christmas tradition representing good fortune and optimism.

Urushi lacquer (or maki-e) first used in Japan around 300BC, is a symbol for status, prosperity and discerning taste. It is therefore unsurprising that Sailor, Platinum and Pilot/ Namiki sought to apply this quintessentially Japanese technique to pen making early on during the 1920s. Beyond its aesthetic merit, the urushi lacquer acts as a protective casing as it is acid free, alkaline free and resistant to both heat and water. Maki-e comprises a broad range of techniques but translates essentially to 'sprinkled picture'. The choice of subject matter, through symbolism and allegory, reveals the individual expression of the maki-e artist as well as hinting to a feeling, personality and individual circumstances of the pen owner.

Here in Raden technique, the planets and galaxy are depicted by small inlays of gold and silver, mother of pearl, finely cut oysters and abalone shells, rendered in coloured shades using both Fuse-zaishiki and Gin-birame techniques.
This pen is produced by Misa Seki, of the Kokkokai group of Maki-e artists, under the artistic direction of the master Yoshiaki Taguchi, recognised in Japan and a living national treasure.

We do not recommend posting this pen as it can make marks on the barrel. Urushi lacquer is light sensitive and can discolour, avoid exposure to UV lighting and incandescent lights - ideally store in a pen soft pen case. Do not use any abrasives or chemicals to clean the pen, do not take apart. All repairs should be carried out by an authorised Pilot Namiki repair agent only.
