Wallace Seymour "Watteau, Scale of Love" National Gallery Oil Paint Set

£300.00

From the North Yorkshire workshop of our most respected pigment experts, Pip Seymour and Rebecca Wallace, we are pleased to offer this exclusive set of nine oil paints, inspired by pigments found in paintings at the National Gallery – particularly Jean-Antoine Watteau's The Scale of Love

Artists or otherwise interested parties can purchase a ticket to a tour of the National Gallery, led by Pip and Rebecca, that will focus on these nine pigments and the techniques, mediums and materials artists throughout history have used to express them in their own work. Tour attendees will be able to purchase the set at a significantly discounted price. See the tour listing for more details.

Jean-Antione Watteau was a French Rococo painter renowned for inventing the style of painting known as the fête galante, small pictures depicting listless couples in verdant, idyllic backgrounds. The Scale of Love – in which pinks, reds and russet browns dominate – is a prime example of the genre.

Despite his success (he managed to become a member of the ultra-elite French Academy), Watteau reportedly disliked his work. His friend, the Comte de Caylus, recorded that he was 'continually sickened by what he did'. Perhaps the perfectionists among us can relate.

Colours included in the set:

Flake White NT (non Toxic)
Unique metal mineral pigment © Wallace Seymour 2010 onwards. Formulated to replace old toxic lead white. Has similar properties: thick, dense
paint paste, quick drying, slightly warm white shade, subtle in admixtures.
