The Adoration Greeting Card
£6.75
A jubilant depiction of the birth of Jesus in a bold and dramatic gold foiled effect.
The subject sometimes called The Adoration of Christ depicting the Virgin kneeled by baby Jesus and an older Joseph by her side, angels in splendour above, is not taken from scriptures but derives from Saint Bridget of Sweden's (1303 - 1373) vision of the nativity. Over a hundred years later, the scene is taken up by many Renaissance painters, notably Botticelli and becomes a popular subject matter in Florentine 15th century painting.
As much pertinent to art history as to Christian iconography, this card makes a flamboyant, even baroque visual statement, heavy in symbolism as a celebration of love.
