This box of aniseed-flavoured bonbons is here sold in its oldest and original packaging style depicting a love story between a shepherd and a shepherdess. The makers coat the aniseed in layers and layers of sugar to make each bonbon.
Often seen in French petrol station shops in the regional product aisle, this is a cultural classic made in Burgundy, France since 1951. Its' distinctive ingredient aniseed is a symbol for happiness and fertility; traditionally they were given to newlyweds.
Consistent with our Christmas theme for 2024, A Rococo Christmas, it may also be relevant to cite that anise bonbons were a favourite of Versailles' eponymous King Louis XIV.
